Little Compton can take simple step into 21st century

We are all aware Little Compton has a substantial senior population as well as many summer residents who live out of state. These taxpayers in particular are not properly served by current video technology.

Although local volunteers have diligently recorded town meetings over the past several years at relatively low cost, many communities embrace digital services that permit live streaming of Town Council meetings at reasonably minor expense. This service enables any interested citizen to watch the meetings in real time or view them at a later date from the digital archives.

The present technology also assures timely advance knowledge of the issues to be addressed in each meeting which has often been lacking. Moreover, it would further provide an alternative to attending for those residents concerned with hazards associated with darkness or adverse weather. The democratic slate looks forward to improving public participation in this way and more.

Little Compton Town Council — Do your job

My name is Jeremy Allen and I am running for Little Compton Town Council. I have been a business owner in Little Compton for over 20 years, and know the process for filling empty positions within an organization.

Ever since our last town administrator stepped down in July 2017, the Little Compton Town Council has been completely silent in hiring a replacement, until their last meeting when they voted to start interviews right before the election.

Last year, one of their solutions was to appoint the Town Council president as the interim town administrator last November. Just imagine if the chairperson of the Little Compton School Committee decided to serve as the superintendent when a vacancy opened up. In the same 14-month time period, the school committee managed to complete a full search for the superintendent position with a search committee composed of a cross section of the community. The current Town Council is rushing, before an election, to do a job they should have done 14 months ago.

A choice for change in Little Compton

This article first appeared in the Sakonnet Times on September 27, 2018
As a candidate for Little Compton Town Council, I join four capable town residents on the first five-person Democratic slate to challenge for these positions since 2002. Four of our five Republican opponents have served continuously on the council since 2004. Over the course of six elections, only six Democratic and independent candidates in total have challenged these incumbents.
For the civic health of our community, I believe that town voters should have meaningful choices for these important positions - choices that reflect the diversity of opinions, backgrounds, and skills represented in Little Compton. With my fellow candidates, I hope to bring fresh perspectives to town government, encompassing fair treatment for all, respect for the town's heritage, protection of natural reources, and efficient management of town operations. The goal is to preserve the community attributes Little Compton residents cherish, while preparing the town for the intensifying challenges of the future.
